![]() ![]() ![]() And unlike the continuous action of movies, comics leave our brains to fill in the gaps. Comics have an especially non-linear relationship with time, allowing the reader to apprehend the past, present, and future all on the same page. So how do you preserve a story, characters, and a vibe while making the necessary changes to fit a square peg through a round hole?ĭespite their passing resemblance to storyboards, comic books and movies are very different forms of storytelling. Neither is the communal experience of playing a board game. The interactivity that defines video games is not available in movies (yet!). The principal character/narrator is Tommy Johnson, whose internal monologues allow the reader an inside view of football hooliganism and the adrenaline highs involved. The Football Factory is the controversial debut novel by English author John King, and is based around the adventures of a group of working-class Londoners who follow Chelsea home and away, fighting their rivals on the streets of England's cities. ![]() ![]() ![]() So many YA novels fade to black as the young lovers roll off-screen to penetrate each other. The Hunger Games casually features twenty-two murdered children, The (very dark) Bunker Diary won the 2014 Carnegie Medal but sex, inexplicably for something most of us are doing on the regular, remains shocking. Sex is, I would say without question, the only taboo left in YA. This is, after all, a book that deals so honestly with sex in an environment obsessed with gatekeepers (who often don’t exist) and parental complaints. I wonder if Forever would struggle to get published now. Spoiler alert: the eventual drift in affection Katherine experiences is as authentic as the first flush of love she feels. Of course, it’s not just a book about sex it’s a book about Michael and Katherine’s relationship and the sweet and sour nature of first love. It’s so exploratory it almost borders on non-fiction. Yet, there’s still something pure and undiluted about the examination of sex in Forever. ![]() ![]() ![]() Maybe I'm being a little unfair, but I've never regarded Asimov as an author who went in for deep philosophical insights. ![]() That is nice but unconfirmed idea that would glue parts together. Interesting idea from the comment here: "No doubt Estwald telepathically communicates to Selene". And humanity regardless of all the stupidity that happened initially later beat the para-Universe humans and find a win-win solution? What role it plays then in book? I see only this: to show that "gods themselves" were actually not that much developed and were actually rather cynical and egoistical. The second part is such a self-contained story with little connections with other two. And that creatures from para-Universe are totally fine with Sun exploding. The one who sent the message from para-Universe was opposed to the authorities. All the assumptions and guesses that are made by humans were correct and second part just confirms them: It doesn't actually provide any details for the story seen from the our universe. While I enjoyed the whole book I was thinking about role of the second part in the book. I recently finished "The Gods Themselves" by Isaac Asimov. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Take a look below to see some of the most frequently challenged and banned books of the 20th century-from controversial Pulitzer Prize winners to rule-busting cult classics. In order to capture the city before Thucydides arrived, Brasidas offered to let everyone who wished to stay keep their property, and offered safe passage to those who wanted to leave. The city was defended by the Athenian general Eucles, who sent for help from Thucydides (at that point a general, later a famous historian), who was at Thasos with seven Athenian ships. In the winter of 424–423, around the same time as the Battle of Delium, Brasidas besieged Amphipolis, an Athenian colony in Thrace on the Strymon river. Early December 424, Brasidas set out for his main objective: Amphipolis. In late August, the Brasidians arrived at and took Acanthus on the Chalcidice. After foiling an Athenian attempt to capture Megara, Brasidas marched his army through Thessaly and linked up with Perdiccas II of Macedon, one of Sparta's northern allies. Brasidas gathered an army of 700 helots armed as hoplites and 1,000 mercenary hoplites from the Peloponnese near Corinth. In 424 BC, in response to the Athenian harassments of the Peloponnese from Pylos and Cythera after the Battle of Pylos, Spartan general Brasidas gained permission to take an army north to attack Athenian holdings in Thrace. It was the culmination of events that began in 424 BC with the capture of Amphipolis by the Spartans. The Battle of Amphipolis was fought in 422 BC during the Second Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The book also features a special poster jacket, with the front flap unfolding to reveal an all-new fully painted origin story of the Fantastic Four.
